The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in co-operative education and work integrated learning (WIL), for 50 years. Co-op and WIL give students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Department of Arts and Science Co-op is responsible for preparing over 4,000 undergraduate students from 58 academic areas to compete for paid co-op work term opportunities. The department is also responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university co-op programming contribute to the development of well qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Team Lead, External Relations and Industry Partnerships, the Business Development and Marketing Officer plays a strategic role in expanding the visibility, reach, and impact of Arts and Science Co-op (AS Co-op) programs across priority industry sectors.
This role takes a planned and data-informed approach to business development, employer acquisition, and sector marketing. The incumbent is responsible for driving awareness of our co-op talent and programs through targeted outreach strategies, marketing campaigns, and high-impact engagement initiatives. By combining business development discipline with strong marketing execution, the Business Development and Marketing Officer strengthens our brand presence in key sectors and converts visibility into sustained employer partnerships.
The role is accountable for identifying and prospecting new employers across growth industries such as Life Sciences, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, Manufacturing, Technology, and other sectors as prioritized. Using labour market intelligence and sector analysis, the incumbent develops targeted market strategies, builds employer pipelines, and advances prospects through the partnership lifecycle from awareness to active engagement.
A significant component of this role involves designing and executing integrated marketing initiatives to promote co-op programming and student talent. This includes conceptualizing and leading online and in-person sector events, content marketing including creating promotional materials and campaigns, leveraging CRM systems for targeted communications, and tracking campaign performance to optimize lead generation and employer conversion. The Business Development and Marketing Officer ensures that marketing efforts are measurable, aligned with sector priorities, and directly tied to business development outcomes.
While balancing the needs of students, employers, and the university, the primary goal of the position is to develop, nurture, and expand strong employer relationships that generate high quality, paid, academically relevant co-op work term opportunities. The incumbent is responsible for initiating new industry relationships, deepening existing partnerships, and strengthening employer engagement through consistent brand positioning and high-touch relationship management.
In consultation with the Team Lead, the Business Development and Marketing Officer develops an annual sector plan with defined targets for employer acquisition, partnership growth, marketing reach, and retention. All efforts are grounded in the collective objective of advancing student success and expanding access to meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
Your responsibilities will include:
Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
Identifying, fostering and maintaining relationships with potential and existing employers
Developing and implementing marketing plans to promote programs, events and/or initiatives that support strategic objectives
Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials and communication plans to support departmental objectives
Conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities
Analyzing data to determine trends and recommend target markets
Conducting detailed labour market analysis to inform program and partnership development
Analyzing statistical information to evaluate the performance of programs and/or partnerships
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, commerce or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in business development, B2B marketing, growth strategy or partnership marketing roles with demonstrated impact
Proven track record of driving measurable growth in a target-driven environment, including employer acquisition, lead generation, conversion optimization, and relationship expansion across new and existing market segments
Strong expertise in integrated marketing strategy and execution, including positioning, value proposition development, buyer persona design, campaign design, brand messaging, and demand generation
Demonstrated experience managing the full partnership and business development lifecycle, from market segmentation and prospecting to conversion, retention, and expansion, with clear performance tracking
Experience designing and executing multi-channel marketing initiatives, including email campaigns, digital outreach, events, webinars, and in-person engagement activities, with the ability to measure ROI and campaign effectiveness
Proficiency in CRM and/or Marketing platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot (or others) including pipeline management, campaign tracking, reporting, and data-driven decision making
Demonstrated ability to translate data and insights into actionable growth strategies and clear executive-level reporting including presentation and storytelling skills
Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
Highly organized, performance-oriented, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment that requires both structured planning and agile execution
